Dogwood is recruiting; we are looking for someone with an in-depth knowledge of the equestrian industry to join our team in Chichester.

The ideal candidate will not only be very knowledgeable about horses and the equestrian industry as a whole, but will also be a good writer, ability to multi task, a good telephone manner and an affable nature to deal with our broad spectrum of clientele.

The primary responsibility will be to assist the General Manager with the day to day running of the company website; this includes producing written copy for news stories, articles and blogs as well as writing engaging and informative product descriptions. The role will also include order processing and fulfilment as well as account data entry.

The role is Mon-Fri 8.30am – 5.30pm with some flexibility for weekend work when we’re exhibiting at shows. Previous retail experience would be preferable but is by no means essential as training will be given.

Dogwood @ Olympia - See you there!

The Olympia Horse Show is known by every equine enthusiast as the ultimate lead up to Christmas. The show is famous for its electric atmosphere, great shopping, amazing show jumping spectacles and world class performances; a Christmas build up for the whole family.

The shows main events feature throughout the week with classes running in the international arena every day. Tuesday and Wednesday will see dressage performances such as the FEI Dressage World Cup Qualifier and World Cup Dressage competition. Thursday onwards will then see major international show jumping competitions such as speed stake classes, the famous Puissance, FEI show jumping World Cup Qualifier and the Olympia Grand Prix.

However, the events aren’t the only attraction to the famous horse show, with the Olympia shopping village having everything any equestrian could possibly dream of all under one roof. This year, Dogwood London will be one of 16 new exhibitors at the show with our collection of casuals and tweeds. The collection includes our now iconic polo tops, together with the unveiling of our ‘brand new and unseen’ (not even on our website yet) beautiful and British tweed fashion jackets!

You can find the Dogwood stand in the National gallery stand R18, from 2pm on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th – Monday 19th from 10am onwards.

Natural Horsemanship - Bridless riders warned about dangers of road riding!

Natural Horsemanship is always a beautiful sight to see, whatever style of riding you come from. A trusting horse that can be ridden without a bridle, in a relaxed way seems a millions miles from traditional English riding at times, but have you ever wondered about the implications if something went wrong?

Bridless riders are being warned of the different situations between riding at home and riding out on the roads. The Highway Code, rule 52 states “Never ride a horse without a saddle and bridle.” and if you fail to observe these rules, this could potentially lead to a road traffic offence. However, what if an accident happened which affected another driver? Would you be covered under your insurance company?

For example, terms of insurance usually state that people can be insured fully if they do not undertake dangerous behavior. However, if other road users are affected, this could lead to legal proceedings.

An associate director of the popular equestrian insurance company SEIB, David Buckton said that reasonable precautions should always be taken to avoid a claim.

“However, the terms of personal accident insurances arranged by SEIB make no stipulations about the use or otherwise of bridles or saddlery,” said Buckton.

“Riders should always be open with insurers, disclosing activities they are likely to undertake, and ensuring they’re in control of their horses, taking into account their normal riding activity, personal experience and the horse’s level of training."

The Natural Horsemanship society does offer a policy that protects riders while using natural horsemanship riding equipment such as rope halters through an association called Fidelius Insurance Solutions.

Get Well Soon Tim!

Get well Tim Stockdale is a wish for any persons in support of equestrianism and British Show jumping. Well known for his dedication and success to show jumping, 47 year old Tim Stockdale is on the mend after his accident on the 17th October.

The accident happened while the Olympic show jumper was trying out a young horse in North Wales and moved to adjust a piece of horse tack. The horse jerked forward, knocking Tim from the saddle where he hit the post and rail fencing. He was unconscious for a while after landing outside the school.

Immediately, Tim was transferred to Shrewsbury Hospital and then moved to a spinal unit. At first it was thought he had fractured two vertebrae but new tests have revealed that it is actually three, along with torn ligaments on both sides of the neck.

Due to adequate safety equipment when the accident happened, Tim is now on the mend with six weeks bed rest and physiotherapy. Laura, Tim’s wife has said that her husband is in good spirits but isn’t the easiest of patents saying: "He's really fidgety and all I hear the nurses saying is, 'Will you stop moving!

"He doesn't do relaxing, so it's going to be hard."

The famous show jumper, sponsored by Tuffa footwear, is hoping to make a recovery and be back on the circuit around February, March time. Other riders have shown their support offering to take his horses to competitions and fans have relentlessly shown support though social networking and emails.

New Jumping Simulator Released!

Have you ever thought of trying out some show jumping or maybe even getting some practice cross country? Well, thanks to the new jumping simulator from Racewood, you don’t even need to even get on a real horse!

Racewood have built the new simulator to add to their collection of dressage, polo and racing simulators. Built to improve your confidence and eliminate faults exhibited by the rider, the jumping simulator can add bags of skills to riding without having to go anywhere near an ‘actual’ horse.

So, how does it work? The simulator is built with leg sensors that respond to movement on all areas of horse tack such as the bit, the saddle and the stirrups. The horse will jump perfectly every time so the simulator will show if you are off balance or relying on aids such as neck straps.

The Racewood Jumping simulator will be available around Christmas time, but if you’re hoping to put this on your Christmas list, it may be your only present, as simulator costs start at £50,000!

The Real War Horse

With the forthcoming War horse film set to be released in January, a book has been recreated to tell the story of a real war horse.

Warrior: The Amazing Story of a Real War Horse tells the story of Winston Churchills friend, General Jack Seely and his 33 year old horse. Their story tells of the journey as they headed to France in August 1914 during the First World War.

The book was first published back in 1934 as ‘My Horse Warrior’. Brough Scott, Jack Seely’s Grandson introduced the new edition which also contains pictures of Jack and Warrior with his military long riding boots and horse riding clothing.

“His escapes were quite wonderful. Again and again he survived when death seemed certain and indeed, befell all his neighbours. It was not all hazard; sometimes it was due to his intelligence. I have seen him, even when a shell has burst within a few feet, stand still without a tremor – just turn his head and, unconcerned, look at the smoke of the burst," wrote General Jack Seely.

Royal Gold State Coach goes in for a 'Service'

The Royal Gold State Coach is going in for a major refurbishment just in time for The Queens Diamond Jubilee next year.

The Royal coach has been used for every coronation of a British monarch since George IV. Built back in 1792, it’s an incredibly prestigious piece of Royal History which weighs 4 tonnes and is 24ft long and is pulled by 8 horses.

Johan Ulvede, a Master Saddler from Devon has been working on the beautiful piece of horse tack, as the straps needed a complete overhaul.

“I’ve done other work for the Royal Mews but this is the most prestigious,” said Johan who has been reworking the suspension straps for nearly a year with six rows of hand stitching on each of the four 4m straps.

“It’s a thorough process. The straps were deteriorating, so I’m stripping them back and overhauling them.”

“The days are long and there’s been a lot of stitching, but I’m really enjoying it.”

The Royal Gold State will be completed and handed over by November, ready for next years Royal celebrations.

You may want to pull out your riding boots after experiencing the new Sky Sports broadcast of Horse Of The Year Show (HOYS 4– 9 October) in 3D. Following in the footsteps of rugby, football and cricket, Sky sports will be showing the very first 3D equestrian show the world has ever seen.

Despite Sky 3D being launched only a year ago, the coverage will include international classes such as the speed horse, accumulator classes through to the Pony Club mounted games! Sky has also teamed up with event organisers for this jump along feature – equestrian clothing at the ready!

“I’m really excited,” explained managing director of HOYS, Helena Pettitt.

“To see a horse jumping out of the screen will be amazing."

Robin Broomfield from Sky 3D explained that ‘3D lends itself very well to equestrianism’ and compares well to other sports such as rugby which got viewers jumping out of their seats.

Visitors to the show will be able to watch the 3D footage at the Lakeside bar, however home viewers able to watch the show in 3D are likely to be fewer, given 3D television only being available to purchase in the last year.

Horse Racing drama soon to hit our tv screens!

A new equestrian drama described as ‘seedy, magical and outdoorsy’ is about to hit our screens in 2012 after the release of the teaser trailer. Staring big names such as Dustin Hoffman, the drama focuses on the interconnection between gamblers, horses, and big money.

The horse racing drama which has aptly been named ‘Luck’ swaps the day to day rider in casual equestrian clothing for big money and men in suits; a dark thriller made up of all the elements which make a great film.

The 45 second long trailer features footage from the drama that revolves around characters all tied to the sport of racing. Hoffman plays main character, gambler Ace Bernestein following a life of racing, gambling, and fun.

Luck is casting a darker light on the sport compared to Hollywood films such as 2010’s Secretariat and the much loved Seabiscuit.

Let’s hope its good enough to merit us all pulling off our riding boots and taking a seat on the sofa for the new drama!

New Hunting season starts with the standard threats from LACS

A warning to the men and women in hunt coats has been issued by the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) claiming to up the ante on monitoring actives for the forthcoming season.

"We've more people on the ground, our biggest investigations team ever and better links with the police, so be careful."

LACS have said that the fight is bigger than ever, saying they have taken on former special branch officer to lead new intelligence after investing in new equipment and databases.

However, Tim Bonner from the Hunting office has claimed the statements as ‘bravado’ and the "the bottom line is that for all this effort and all their talk, it's unlikely that LACS will achieve a single prosecution from the 2010-11 season."

However, it’s not just fox hunt clothing which can be seen on the field with saboteurs and monitors on the rise. Although still nowhere near to the numbers seen back in the 1980s where a hunt could see over 100 at one meet, an average Saturday will see 40 to 60 around the country but there is evidence that anti activity is creeping up.

Joint-master of the Surrey Union, Mark Sprake said he has noticed their numbers increasing although they haven’t bothered him this season.

"They quietened down immediately after the ban, but they have gradually come back over the past couple of seasons. It's the same old faces." said Mark.

A new video game has been launched to give players the thrill of racing, from the comfort of their own home!

Champion Jockey: Gr1 Jockey and Gallop Racer can let anyone enjoy the thrills and spills while learning to use equestrian equipment such as reins and a whip without even going near a real horse saddle!

Released on the 2nd September, the game can be used on Xbox, Wii and PS3 and can be played online against other racing enthusiasts. Riders can chose between jumps or flat from their virtual armchair saddle!

"Players will learn how to use the horse's reins and whip as well shifting their body-weight to ride their thoroughbred to victory," claimed a spokesman for the game, though we think it takes a few years riding out both lots to achieve all this. "

Stunning images taken of swimming horses

Beautiful underwater photos have been taken of horses swimming off the coast of Malta by photographer, Kurt Arrigo.

The photographer couldn’t believe his luck when he initially saw the racehorses and their trainers out in the sea for a spot of exercise. Great for toning muscle, the herds of horses swim in threes with trainers on hand, without even a bridle to guide them and swapped their riding boots for swimming shorts.

The half an hour sessions gave the photographer enough time to capture the beautiful photos, using scuba gear to get down underneath the horses in the water, which at first gave the horses a bit of a fright.

'When they settled down they just swam above me allowing me to work at different angles using the seascape, fish and different light to get the best shots.'

'It was one of the most thrilling shoots I have ever done watching them gracefully move through the water.'

Although a shoot with the horses was a dangerous task, Kurt Arrigo is an experienced underwater photographer. He has shot scenes such as schools of hammerhead sharks off the coast of the Galapagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef and his photographs of the horses were just as impressive, creating magnificent light and an underwater feel.

He commented 'I had to calculate my depth and make sure that I wouldn't get hit by one of the hooves.
'It's quite amazing as you can really hear the horse work out - apparently it's quite hard work for them so they only do this for around half an hour.

'I've not seen anything like it before, and not all horses can swim as some just don't get it.'

Grooming kits a 'No No' for Alfie!

Trimming, pulling and grooming is all something we are familiar with but ever thought of your horse growing a moustache?

Alfie and his seven inch golden curls of moustache could quite possibly be the longest in Britain. Stable manager, Hayley Coxteth has tried all the grooming accessories but Alfie has become extremely attached to the overgrown hair on his top and bottom lip.

‘He is a real character. A few years ago it was really big and full but it now looks a little scraggy because it's so long.

'It was bizarre when I first saw it and my first inkling was we need to shave it off. But he does not let you anywhere near it.’

The stallion that is kept in Gloucestershire has been growing the moustache for five years and is happy to be ridden as long as he can keep it explained Hayley.

Virtual horse racing, ownership without the cost!

With over 1,400 followers, Tweet Lady is fast becoming the most famous horse not just on twitter but all over the internet. Each Tweet Lady follower is being classed as ‘virtual owner’ having updates of Lady’s life without even having to put on a pair of country boots!

She recorded her 1st win at Kempton Park racecourse, winning by a length at odds of 16 - 1.

The scheme was launched in June by Racing for a Change to raise awareness to open the opportunity to own a racehorse to the general public. The two year old filly that is trained in Devon by Rod Millman, has her twitter regularly updated by Rod’s son and Lady’s jockey – James Millman.

Surfers harness 'horse power' to ride the waves!

If you want to harness the waves using horse power, you may think that speed boats and jet skis are needed to pull wake boarders and surfers, but how about using actual horses?

A group of surfers on the French coast in Baule has come up with a new sport where horses gallop through the water at speeds up to 35 mph.

Surfer, Harold Quinquis said, “We have friends who go down to the beach on their horses and enjoy galloping in the waves. You can never go as fast on a surfboard as you can on a horse - and I thought it would be great to be able to go that fast.”

Surfers are attached to the back of the horses’ saddles and race through waves for the fastest time. Riders are dressed in normal equestrian attire with riding hats and the sport is definitely for the adrenaline junkie!

The Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead was the recent showcase event for the brand new Dogwood clothing collection. The selection of branded casual wear and riding jackets proved a great success with competitors and spectators alike!

Is enough being done to keep riders safe after injury at competitions?

Due to the nature of equestrian sports accidents are a common occurrence in the competition and leisure riding environment alike. Although rules are put in place by equestrian organisations, it is often asked whether enough is being done to keep riders safe after an injury has happened?

Show jumper, Charlotte Arnold recently had to be taken to hospital during a competition after her horse kicked her at Waterford Equestrian Centre.

Charlotte said: "She walloped me full on the head, I went flying - I turned three somersaults in the air."

The kick resulted in Charlotte receiving six staples to her head, but she still went on to compete the following day. Still in a delicate state, she won the last of this year’s scope qualifying classes, having to squeeze her riding hat over the bandage.

"I wasn't concussed, but if you are, I think you should be stood down." said Charlotte, responding to claims that organisations such as British Show Jumping and British Dressage should follow the rules of eventing and racing to keep risk to the minimum.

However, it has been argued that each situation should be judged on the seriousness of the individual injury. Dr Suzannah Hoult from Medical Equestrian Association added that, in her opinion, rules regarding assessment of riders should be looked at by the governing bodies and if a rider has received a head injury they should receive an appropriate suspension.

Just putting a riding hat on and getting back on the horse is not necessarily a safe option.

Olympic Test Event - Positive Response From Eventers

The Olympic Test Event went underway this week at Greenwich Park, won by the fabulous Piggy French on board DHI Topper W sporting her GB riding jacket. The unveiling of next years Olympic venue was an invitational event which brought the crème de la crème of riders to test the facilities set up in the heart of London.

The Cross country course was the first concern for many when Greenwich Park was announced as the centre of the equestrian disciplines. Despite this, the course went down a storm with testing obstacles throughout including twists, hills and changes in terrain. The test course was half the length of next year’s Olympic course which looks over the London Skyline, sure to be a great setting.

However, other disciplines didn’t get such a positive response from dressage riders and show jumpers. David McPherson commented that the fibre and waxed sand all weather surface (which has been built on stilts to avoid damage to the park) was nowhere near good enough, and Show jumper, Nick Skelton commented on ‘The ground being a little dead and dense at the moment’.

More tests will be carried out up until the games start and more time will be allowed for the surface to bed in to get the spring that’s needed at top level. Let’s just hope we see plenty of those iconic red, white and navy riding jackets in the medals next year!

War Horse trailer just released!

It’s time to kick off your riding boots to watch the most anticipated equestrian film of the year, the extraordinary War Horse. Directed by Steven Spielberg, there is already talk of Oscars in the pipeline and that’s just from the trailer released this week.

The famous story was based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo which captured the imagination of millions. The novel was then adapted for stage play, becoming one of the most iconic equestrian stories of our time.

Along with the equine star, Joey, there will be a host of British talents getting on their riding boots such as Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston and Emily Watson.

The film’s due to be released at Christmas with Spielberg’s epic war scenes and sweeping music from composer John Williams, its sure to be nothing short of a tear jerker.

Ashton looks a picture in her Dogwood riding jacket

Over the weekend (25-26th June) our beautiful Dogwood model, Ashton Bricka sported the Dogwood Black Double Stripe Jacket for the first time at the Hickstead Derby.

The West Sussex based rider told us, ‘I found the jacket was really cool, comfortable and breathable despite being a very hot day’.

Ashton has enjoyed great success over the years with her horses Drift and KD. Producing them herself from 3 year olds, KD won the 4 year old Style and Performance at Scope festival and has qualified for Blue Chip every year of competing. This year the pair has already qualified for two classes at the Scope festival and will also be at the Hickstead Royal International Horse Show in July.

H-ELP campaign for more humane training of Elephants

Elephants and Horses have never been two animals that spring to mind as two of a kind but when you look deeper, they have more in common than one could imagine. Firstly, they are both herd animals, both herbivores and new research by world renowned Elephant trainer, Andrew Mclean, has shown the world that there is much more to these beautiful animals.

Elephants have been domesticated in Asia for over six thousand years and are used as a working animal for many. In the wild they are accustomed to days of mud baths, eating vegetation and quiet companionship; but when they are captured as ‘working elephants’ this idyll can end up being markedly different, involving inhumane training techniques to demean the animal so they lose all sense of freedom and free will.

The H-ELP foundation has been working with Elephants and handlers to show a new way of working together. Dr Andrew Mclean, a former Australian horse trainer, hung up his riding boots to study Elephants, discovering that like Horses, Elephants learn in logic based manner. This enabled Mclean to train and teach Elephants in a humane way, using dressage techniques that form the basis of every equestrian discipline. The training methods were created in a step by step programme to give safety to both the Elephants as well as their handlers.

Laura Bechtolsheimer to star in BBC Olympic's documentary

Top hats and tailcoats at the ready as dressage rider, Laura Bechtolsheimer is to feature on this weekends BBC British Olympic Dreams documentary which focuses on British hopefuls for the London games next year.

British event rider, Piggy French featured on the show back in May and now its Gloustershire based, Laura Bechtolsheimer’s time to shine, taking BBC journalist, Ollie Williams behind the scenes

"Laura was a great candidate for the programme — she's one of the finest dressage riders in the world and one of Britain’s top prospects to secure a medal," said Ollie Williams.

"We spent a day filming at her yard - meeting her horses and family and learning how Laura and Alf grew up together and formed such a great partnership. And how's she's preparing for the London 2012.

"For the second part of the programme we went to Germany and met Totilas and Matthias Rath — who Laura used to go out with. So that is especially interesting — competing against her ex-boyfriend who's riding the best — and most expensive — horse in the world."

Journalist Ollie Williams will be finding out what makes the combination of Laura and the well known chestnut, Mistral Hojris (Alf) tick, and their future Olympic plans. The program will be aired at 1.15pm on the 18th June and will be available on BBC iPlayer up to 7 days after.

Edward Gal shimmers in golden riding boots

Dressage riders are known for there perfect image in and out of the saddle, but dressage rider Edward Gal has pushed the boundaries of the dressage etiquette being kitted out by his new sponsor in golden riding boots.

So are they the new ‘must have’ or slightly too daring for most? There has been a split decision on the Horse and Hound Facebook page with humorous comments such as "The Only Way is Essex called. They want their boots back."

Another person commented with a more light hearted approach to the boots saying: "Go ahead. If we are not having fun, why are we doing it?"

What's next to be made in gold I wonder? Golden bridles, saddles...perhaps even riding hats!

Mary King celebrates her half century!

5 Olympic appearances, 6 team World and European gold medals and 4 British Open titles over a career of 30 years, Mary King is a true legend in the equestrian world and will be celebrating her 50th Birthday this month by sailing around Croatia.

"I feel rather guilty having a week off as I leave for Luhmühlen with Apache Sauce the day after I get home," said Mary.

Don’t threat, she won’t be hanging up her riding boots just yet with the hunger to ride in London Olympics next year despite being the most senior member of the team.

Mary explained: "I am still feeling very fit and hungry for success, so slowing down is certainly not on the cards at the moment."

Mary was asked if she would be retiring after London 2012 Olympics but is even considering 2016 Rio Olympics which she would be the same age as Badmintons oldest winner, Mark Todd.

"My son Freddie kept asking me the same question and I told him possibly after London 2012, but when he found out that Rio was hosting the next Games, he gave me permission to keep going until 2016 — he's a huge football fan and is very keen to go to Brazil."

"Now Toddy's back on the scene it makes me feel young again" joked Mary.

New British Show jumping classes

Get out your riding boots and show jackets, BS have designed new classes for those jumping at 1m and below. The ‘club membership scheme’ will be starting this month for riders over 12 years of age which have not been placed in a 90cm National Amateur class, British Novice or Pony British Novice in the last 3 years.

The new club membership will cost £30 to register rider and one horse and instead of winning money, riders will gain points with a regional championship once a year, creating a ‘friendly’ and ‘welcoming’ atmosphere. ‘Club’ classes will be set up around the country allowing members to travel from region to region, gaining points.

‘We want to encourage people to make the step into BS. The perception is that BS is elitist and you must be jumping at 1.20m to take part, but that’s not the case.’ said the director of sport Justine Naylor.

The new classes will be run over 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1m and riders will be allowed to compete in two regular BS shows a year without prize money or qualifications.

Titan the 18.3hh gentle giant take some well earned R & R

Known for his gleaming horse tack and rider, and being the largest police horse in the UK, Titan will be spending 6 months recuperating at the at the Horse Trust Sanctuary in Buckinghamshire. The 18.3hh shire cross who weighs more than a ton will be spending time recovering from intermittent lameness caused by ringbone.

Titan has been involved with many jobs during his 9 years of working for Thames Valley Police involved in duties such as crowd control during matches for Reading football clubs, police escorting the Queen and patrolling night clubs across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

Titan’s return to the police force will depend on his recovery and if no improvement, he will retire at the sanctuary where he is already loved.

The yard manager, Shirley Abbott at The Horse Trust, said: "Titan settled in straight away in his paddock. The staff have already fallen in love with him as he's such a handsome and impressive chap."

Introducing Zack the Show Jumping Zebra!

Ever wanted to ride a Zebra but thought it was impossible? Well, think again, a six year old Zebra in America not only has all the necessary horse tack, but is also now being trained and ridden. Could this be the first show jumping Zebra?!

Owner and trainer, Sammi Jo Stohler from Eastern Oregon, USA has a background in training horses before she moved onto exotic animals. She got the idea to start jumping one of her four Zebra’s, Zack, when he kept jumping the fence out of his field. Using his talents, he has easily taken to the jumps becoming quite the natural.

"He's large pony size, but he jumps very easily," said Sammi "The first time I pointed him at the jump, I put it really low. But he likes jumping, and going higher was no problem."

Sammi got her first taste of the African animal 10 years ago and now has Zack who she rides, Charlie who she drives and two others; Zorse and Zedonk. She set out to train the Zebras to prove critics wrong.

"To say something is untrainable implies that it can't learn, and we all know that if they couldn't learn, they'd all be extinct. They have to be able to learn and adapt. Obviously, the burden lies on the trainer to be able to train them," she said.

"Zebras are very intelligent. When you teach them something, you don't have to do a lot of review."
Sammi took over ownership of Zack two years ago when his owners couldn’t look after him anymore as he wasn’t very accustomed to humans. Now, with training, Zack can be groomed and ridden like any pony!

"A lot of people don't really know how to handle them, so they run into problems, and rather than trying to fix it, they give up," she said.

"Originally, I was going to work with him, get him over some of his issues, and then sell him again, but he's now going to stay with me."

Royal Wedding horse shoes set to be auctioned for charity

Making a designer shoe for the equestrian world, Household Calvary farrier, Major Wayne Freeman and team spent hours crafting new sets of shoes for 186 horses on parade at the Royal Wedding. So when eyes weren’t set on the royal couple and the horse’s gleaming horse tack and riders, think about all the preparation that went into the horse shoes for the big day at the forges base in Hyde Park.

The horses are based next to the most expensive block of flats in Europe, living in Hyde Park barracks. The stables have full shaving beds everyday, daily rides into Hyde Park and 24hr veterinary assistance and holidays in the country.

The lucky wedding charm of the horse shoe is a well known tradition which comes from the ancient belief that metal keeps away evil. The charms will be auctioned off with proceedings going too the Household Calvary Central Charitable fund. The fund is vital for injured men in need of support, as the men parading at the wedding are in regular danger all over the world; some just returning from Afghanistan who were on the parade on the big day itself.

Farrier Major Freeman laughed: “My mother keeps asking me for a wedding shoe, but I’ve had to tell her that even I can’t have one.”

Requests for the mementos are being made all over the world with Major Freeman and the team of farrier’s working hard to get together each special horse shoe ready for sale. The shoe itself will be lacquered and will come with a photograph of its horse and rider, a certificate of authenticity and in a sealed box.

Bunny Show Jumping - You must be 'hopping mad!'

Ever thought show jumping on your horse was too difficult? Well, maybe Rabbit show jumping could be for you!

Invented in the early 80’s in Sweden, Rabbit show jumping consists of bunnies bouncing around courses of small jumps which vary in height and width. Spreading world wide over the last few years, Rabbit jumping clubs have sprung up across Europe, U.S, Canada, and Japan.

In the German City of Jenna lives the black-and-white star of the bunny jumping world, Snoopy. Part of the local Kaninhop Club, Snoopy uses his bouncy bunny legs to leap over an assortment of fences from barricades, water trays and rails to a maximum of 60cms.

Proud owner of Snoopy, Claudia Fehlen, discovered the sport on the internet. Claudia then started practicing with her rabbits in the back garden and in 2009, founded the Jeana bunny hopping club.

From 2009 Snoopy has proved his talent, with Claudia telling Der Spiegel. 'Snoopy can jump 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) high.'

The 23-year-old also said: 'And he has done well in tournaments. He came in second once, and third another time.'

The competition isn’t just as simple as jumping a few fences. Although the rules vary in different countries, the aim of the game is to clear as many fences as possible with a time element sometimes included. They also range in style, from a dressage style, to high jump and long jump.

However, the sport is becoming controversial with Animal rights groups criticising the use of leashes in Kaninhop competitions and accused trainers of using the equipment to pull rabbits over the fences against there will.

Miss Fehlen rejected the argument, saying that the leashes are practical at competitions. ‘We use them in tournaments for safety,' she said.

'Just think of what would happen if a male were to break free. We want to avoid uncontrolled reproduction. It has happened before.'

So, maybe trade in your equestrian clothing for a jumping bunny and who knows, maybe Britain will be the next place for a club to ‘spring up’!

Metropolitan Police horses get set for their royal duties

With the Royal Wedding going ahead on Friday, the famous grey horses of the Metropolitan Police are still waiting to hear which horses have been chosen to escort the Royal Couple’s carriage on the big day.

The Metropolitan horses will be selected down to nine based on the calmest temperaments and whether there coats match for ceremonial and safety purposes. The beautiful greys will be followed by the marriage procession after the wedding through London from Westminster Abby to Buckingham Palace.

The Troops horses are used in high profile ceremonial events and general patrol including football matches. The experience of theses horses will help them be accustomed to the type of crowds London’s streets will attract on Friday.

The horses have been put through an intense testing programme of various exercises and routines, preparing everything from gleaming horse tack and beautifully turned out horses. The Mounted Branch has much experience leading processions including Diana’s Wedding and the funeral of the Queen Mother.

The Head of Mounted Branch, Bob Barker, explained: 'We look at the grey horses that we've got, and we assess them for their temperament and how they match in colour. Particularly for something like the royal wedding, it's going to be a real challenge for the horses and the officers on the route.

'The noise, the crowd, the flags - it's all going to be a challenge.'

It's Badminton time again!

Running over the bank holiday weekend from 21st – 25th April, the Friday and Saturday will hold the Dressage phase with Sunday being dedicated to the Cross Country Phase. Monday will hold the show jumping day, the finale of the whole event. Top class riders from all over the world will attend the 4 star 3-day-event along with top British riders such as Oliver Townend, William Fox-Pitt and Mary King.

Eventing is a competition designed to test horses over three different phases. The Dressage phase tests a horse’s obedience and elegance, while the cross country phase tests fitness and athleticism over a 4 mile course, jumping natural and man made obstacles. Lastly, the show jumping tests agility, control and fitness after a long 3 days.

However, it’s not all just the thrills and spills of Badmintons competitors, being home to the famous shopping village, it provides a huge range of equestrian clothing for you and everything you need for your horse with a big selection of brands; you can browse for hours!

If you can’t get down to Badminton this weekend, don’t worry as Sunday’s Cross Country and Monday’s Show jumping will be broadcast on BBC. Sunday will be broadcast from 11.50am – 5.45pm and Monday 1.00pm – 3.00pm.

Sport Jumping - the future of Show Jumping?

It seems new equestrian sports are popping up all over the place from horse agility to horse boarding and now ‘Sportjumping’ and it just keeps growing; whatever next!

The new equestrian sport of 'Sport Jumping' was founded in Scotland by Bill Alexander, who formulated the idea when he was Chairman for the BSJA Championship show. He arranged a bookie to come along, getting people betting on different horses and riders to spice up the classes. This was when the idea for Sport Jumping was born.

Sport Jumping theoretically works on an equal platform with more experienced and able riders being handicapped. All riders have to jump one round against the clock and any fences knocked down receive time penalties. Betting is highly encouraged, giving a great atmosphere and difference to pure show jumping.

Bill Alexander said: "People came in off the street to watch. We had some coverage in the Glasgow Herald and it did create more of an atmosphere. I've been thinking about it ever since.

"Under BSJA rule 72.2, members can't jump at unaffiliated shows with prize money of more than £10," he said. "But this isn't an unaffiliated show jumping competition — it's something completely different."

The sport is targeted at Show Jumpers, with big prize cash funds and riders being able to wear the same attire as normal competitions; riding hats, riding boots, riding jackets, etc. Classes are open to over 16’s and the sport will be expanding over the UK throughout 2011 so why not give it a go!

You’ve all heard the rhyme about a cow jumping over the moon, well it appears there may be some truth in this…ok, well not the moon bit but the bit about jumping! In Germany there is a new star in the making in the form of 15 year old Regina Mayer and her cow Luna. Luna is not your ordinary cow, as Regina says;

“She thinks she's a horse”.

Luna’s journey started over two years ago when she was born on the farm in Southern Germany. She was slowly accustomed to humans by lots of treats, Regina then started walks with her eventually introducing some horse equipment after six months of preparation

"She was really well behaved and walked normally. But after a couple of metres, she wanted me to get off. You could see that she got a bit peeved."

Regina, who is an aspiring nurse, spends her evenings after school with Luna and likes to think of herself as Luna’s mum and even soul-mates: "When she wants to do something, she does it, when she doesn't, she doesn't," and then Regina went on to say: "And she's often very headstrong but can also be really adorable."

Fly rugs at the ready for sweet itch awareness month

Through personally having a horse with sweet itch, I can understand the frustration and need for more awareness of the condition. It’s frustrating, painful and if not managed can be unbearable. Most summers I see a common trend of owners unaware of the condition, lumps of hair missing from the mane and tail and leaving it out in fields itching all day against a fence. Hopefully, the awareness month will get owners thinking about the problem and realising that the condition can be managed.

Throughout April, equine charities and a drug company are pulling together to launch a sweet-itch awareness month to highlight the condition. The charities include British Horse Society, Redwings Horse Sanctuary and Horse World Welfare which will be working on highlighting preventive measures and managing the condition.

With sweet-itch effecting 3-5% of horses in the UK from the start of spring and peaking in the summer months, the awareness month comes at the perfect time.

Management techniques range from horse supplements, to fly sprays and fly rugs. Ideally, when all these different techniques are put together it allows you to manage and give some relief to your horse or pony!

Here are some tips for the summer ahead:

Firstly, midges thrive around standing water and boggy land; they are at their peak at dusk and dawn so stabling or moving them to a different ground would be beneficial during these hours.

Secondly, use fly rugs or a specially designed sweet itch rug to cover the areas which are mostly bitten.

Thirdly, use supplements and plenty of fly spray. NAFF has made targeting products such as D-itch ointment which soothes the broken skin and a D-itch horse feed supplement to fight the skin irritation.

Horse Boarding - New Equine Extreme Sport

Take a horse, a stuntman and a mountain board mixed with a gallon of adrenalin and what do you get? Horse boarding!

The new extreme sport from Daniel Fowler-Prime who featured as a stunt man in films such as The Da Vinci Code, Kingdom of Heaven and Vanity fair invented the sport 5 years ago. Adrenalin seekers are towed behind a horse on a mountain board on an off road surface. It’s said the thrill's in the acceleration; 35 mph in 5 horse strides – that’s fast enough on a horse without being towed behind by a rope!

The 31 year old Daniel was born in Bude, Cornwall and initially experimented with other sports such as ‘horse surfing’ (and no, that’s not a horse on a surf board!). After being a keen surfer and skate border himself, Daniel invented the sport while visiting a friend’s farm in Devon, experimenting by towing boards behind cars and horses.

Mr Fowler-Prime said - 'I have always been a skate boarder, and later a surfer, and working in the field with horses it was just a matter of time before I put the two together.

'For me it beats being dragged by a car because horses can be unpredictable and they get excited when they know they'll get to run.

'Horses generally take to it very easily and normally it only takes a couple of hours to get them used to it.

'It's the first new equine sport for a long while and in our show we have added ramp jumps over four metre gaps. It takes horse riding to another level.

'It attracts both boarders and horse riders, mainly aged from early teens to adult.'

Daniel has now opened National Horse Boarding Training Centre in Seisdon, near Wolverhampton with the sport quickly growing and organizing the first events which will be held over the summer. The competition will consist of a team of one horse, one rider and one board rider and will race an opposing team over a 100m distance. The riders will communicate with the rider to control speed and be wearing protective clothing.

Have you ever had that sinking feeling seeing your beloved mobile phone slip out of your hands and fall to the floor; that split second moment where you bend down to pick it up, cringing as you turn over to see what the damage is? Touchscreens smeared with mud till they can’t even sense your fingers, straw sticking out the earpieces, water damaged screens and in the winter trying desperately to tap in a number in through my begloved hands only to realise the damn touchscreen won’t work with them on…ok so you get the picture.

So, it got the point last week that I decided to take it upon myself to find a solution to this constant issue of mine (and I’m sure one that’s shared by a lot of you out there), so I sat down and did a bit of research on the internet (well where else). The Queen to hang up her riding boots

It's been said the Queen is to hang up her riding boots after reports of her chronic knee condition being too painful for her to continue to horse ride. Despite needing a knee operation the Queens sense of duty is going strong and she has refused to cut back on her royal duties to give her the recommended 4 months to recuperate after the needed operation. In 2003, the Queen received keyhole surgery twice to remove cartilage from her knees and is now said to be suffering from Sciatica. At 84 years of age she may be feeling the wear and tear of Royal life.

The condition means that the Queens famous early morning rides from within the Windsor grounds are perhaps coming to end. A royal source said: ‘The Queen had a knee operation but has suffered ever since and the condition has got a lot worse. She is in so much pain that she has had to give up her beloved riding.’ It is understood that a lift will now be installed at a price of £1 million into the Queens home in Sandringham.

It feels a sad day for such an iconic figure within the equine world to have to hang up her riding boots and equestrian clothing; we wish her all the best should these rumours about her health be true.

What do I want to wear this summer?

With summer only a couple of months around the corner it beggars the question 'what do I want to wear this coming season?'

Looking at some of the trends being set at the moment, Ellen Whitaker is setting a high standard with her iconic Caldene red show jacket, something which has taken off all over the circuit bringing a traditional edge back to the new ‘technical’ style of jumping jacket.

When it comes to riding hats Laura Kraut opitimises the continued favour for the stylish GPA helmets in the show jumping world, I have never seen her compete in anything but a GPA riding hat and she’s not the only one. Three time Hickstead derby Winner, William Funnell, young rider Charlotte Platt, Olympic rider Tim Stockdale through to the majority of everyday show jump riders, they all favour the breathable styles that mean you can finally get a hat which lets your head breath in the warm summer months!

So how about boots? Mine are certainly not in great condition after the toll of winter rain, mud and the squeeze of how many pairs of socks one can physically get on their feet in the winter months! It seems to be that De Niro riding boots at the moment are the obvious choice of boot for the majority of people that show jump. Every other person I seem to speak to are gloating about their new shiny De Niro’s and I have to admit they look fabulous in and out of the saddle, but then again that’s would I would expect from Italian design (from fashion world to horse world)! The ‘Swarovski Crystals’ seem to be on the ‘it’ list and moving on from last years patent top and toe, the new Ramses 8 boot couldn’t have any more sparkle on it without blinding someone – have a look and decide for yourself whether your brave enough for this one!

It might still be a whole year away but with the recent announcement that tickets for London 2012 will go on sale on the 15th March it's best to start making plans as early as possible!

Concentrating on the equestrian events in particular, which are to be housed in Greenwich Park East London, the key figures are as follows:

-    11 Competition Stages
-    75,000 Tickets for Cross-Country day.

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has issued advice for ticket applicants, stating that all applications will be considered equally, regardless of when people apply. If demand exceeds supply tickets will be allocated by random selection for each ticket price band. Joanna Manning-Cooper from the LOCOG said: “We urge buyers to consider their budget very carefully when applying for tickets. They cannot cancel, change or return them once they are allocated.”

Tickets are on sale for 6 weeks from the 15th March – 26th April and people will find out if they have been successful in May or June.

Dickens Retires After 15 Years of Service

Dickens, the longest serving police horse in Greater Manchester, has been forced to hang up his horse boots and retire after developing arthritis. Throughout his time with the police, the 21 year old chestnut Irish thoroughbred-cross has patrolled crime hotspots and carried out crowd control.

“Dickens is one of our toughest and bravest horses,” said Mima Manning, the stable manager for Greater Manchester Police. “He has a cheerful temperament and always goes to work with a smile on his face. He has given a lot to Greater Manchester."

Also retiring with Dickens is Warwick, the force’s eight-year-old 17hh skewbald gelding. Warwick worked for the Greater Manchester police for a period of four years, unfortunately he is retiring due to a problem with his joints which means he is unable to carry out his duties.

Both horses will be moved to their new home at the Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire on the 14th February, where they will remain for the rest of their lives, hopefully in comfortable and happy surroundings.

“We are glad that we are able to thank them for their loyal service by offering them sanctuary and a peaceful place to pass the last years of their lives,” said The Horse Trust’s Jeanette Allen.

“Dickens and Warwick have carried out vital police work in their time with Greater Manchester Police, helping preserve public order and reduce crime.”

Dickens and Warwick, we thank you and wish you well in your retirement.

Mountain and Moorland Working Hunter Here We Come…

Well it has been literally a decade since I last wore some canary breeches and a tweed jacket, and now that I am the proud owner of a New Forest pony I think it is about time I got back onto the showing ground and bought some new riding clothing!

Although in the last paragraph I said I owned a New Forest Pony, I actually have a rather hairy and fat monster. He even has a full grown beard! The dark mornings and evenings put a brick wall in front of any riding outside work hours, so at the moment I’m exercising him at the weekends.

Somehow he manages to transform from this grubby, looking like he is ‘in foal’ oaf into a smart well built pony as soon as I put my foot in the stirrup. He is great for those magical moments where onlookers think you are an amazing rider, but actually you’re really not!

We’re hoping to head off to the New Forest Show and the South of England Show this year. I think there is going to be a lot of work for the both of us as I’m not sure who is the most unfit! I shall keep you updated with our venture into the unknown…

White Turf - Horses on Ice...Literally!

Who’s heard of White Turf?

Well till this morning I was as oblivious to White Turf as I am about, urmm, quantum physics, but after chatting to one of our customers who’s attending it this year I thought I’d do some further research and bring it to you in this here Blog.

White Turf is an annual equestrian event that’s held in St. Moritz, Switzerland on the first 3 Sundays in February. Unlike most such events that are either performed on grass or a sand/composite surface, all competition in St Moritz takes place on snow and ice! Madness. Suffice to say if you’re going to take equestrian sport to a whole new playing level (literally) why not go one more and have your very own equi discipline to race on it. Which of course they have, in the form of Skijoring.

It was way back in 1906 that the sport of Skijoring was established in the Engadine valley in Switzerland. The premise is as simple as it is scary, in its most basic definition it’s a thoroughbred horse race where the riders instead of being in the saddle are instead long reining them with a pair of skis instead of riding boots. So imagine a flat race, on snow, with the riders being towed along at speeds of up to 50kph behind their horse and you get the picture. Like waterskiing only the powerboat is a horse and the surface is snow and not water. As you can imagine they have their fair share of mishaps, perhaps most notably in 1965 where not a single skier crossed the finishing line!

The Starlings of the Somerset levels put on their yearly show

With the nights drawing ever darker and the rain seemingly and endless entity throughout our working week, I don’t know about you, but for me the prospect of stepping outside other than to put the horses to bed after work is about all I can manage. However, come the weekend the first thing I want to do is get outside in the country and embrace what Autumn has to offer, rain included.

Last week I travelled to see my brother who now resides in Glastonbury. Having just got himself a rescue dog, a German Shepherd named ‘Bee’, a lot of walking was the order of the weekend over the Mendips, Cheddar and the Somerset Levels; which brings me to one of the most impressive displays of nature I’ve ever witnessed.

Now I wouldn’t class myself as a twitcher, apart from the odd Buzzard hovering above my head whilst out riding I’m not one to usually get too excited about a load of birds, but this was different. Every Autumn/Winter Starlings migrate from the far north to roost in the ‘relatively’ milder British climate, in particular in the Somerset Levels. So here I was, in my new country boots, ankle deep in water watching the shape shifting formations as the Starlings dart about in the dusk sky. The nearest I can get to describing it would be like the old school days when you held a magnet under a piece of paper with iron filings on it; the movement of the filings bore more than an uncanny resemblance to that of the Starlings.

And now, back to work. I wonder what this weekend brings...

You what, they’ve sold Tottilas!?

First it was the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic and then it was the ‘priceless, money can’t buy’ horse…is there any truth in anything these days? As it’s just been announced one of the best, most coveted dressage horses of all time, Moorlands Totilas has been sold!

After months of speculation and denial by its owners, it was announced by Cees Visser of Moorlands Stables that Totilas has been sold to Paul Schockemohle, the former showjumper turned top European breeder.

Only recently Totilas’ rider, Edward Gal denied rumours stating whilst in America –

“I’ve heard those rumours too, they’re not true, nothing is going on.”

But now in an announcement that has sent shockwaves through the Dressage and indeed whole equestrian community, Cess Visser stated –

“After Kentucky, however, we could no longer ignore the interest in the stallion. Therefore, the time came to discuss matters with one another, and we decided to let Moorlands Totilas go.”

Having seemingly broken every world record going, including Grand Prix, Special and Freestyle it’s no doubt going to come as a blow for Edward's 'horse of a lifetime' as he’s often described him. However his sponsors, Cees and Tosca offered reassurance to the rider insisting they’ll “keep supplying him with potential top horses in the coming years.”

Horsey designer Luella returns with the launch of English style book

Horse loving fashion designer Luella Bartley MBE is rumoured to be considering a come back to fashion design after her label collapsed in 2009.

Her clothing label ‘Luella’ with its flagship Mayfair boutique were forced to cease trading when one of its main suppliers, the Italian production company, Carla Carini closed leaving orders for the label’s spring/summer 2010 collection unfulfilled. Her Singapore based distribution company VSQ then withdrew its support. Her demise came as a massive shock to the fashion industry which awarded Luella the coveted Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards in 2008.

Her clothing was often a quirky take on traditional themes which included some strong equestrian influences like hacking jackets with ¾ length sleeves and idiosyncratic modern details. Her first collection in 1999 was humorously entitled “Daddy, I want a pony”.

Now the former journalist and Vogue employee who lives with her three children and fashion photographer partner David Sims in Cornwall has been reported to be considering a return to clothes design. Her new book, Luella’s Guide to English Style is due to be published later this month and many are hoping that this will be the precursor to her reviving the Luella brand.

At Dogwood we’re great fans of Luella and pray that the rumours are all true and this dreadful waste of British design talent does make a comeback to the London fashion stage.

Dogwood to launch own brand clothing range

After months of planning, Dogwood are set to launch a range of own brand equestrian clothing.

An initial collection including casual tops and gilets for women and men will be followed by a refreshingly contemporary take on traditional competition jackets, breeches and casual outerwear. The ultimate plan is to bring to the market an entire range of stylish clothing largely based on traditional themes but with a contemporary cut, suitable for town or country. Our aim is to make the range as accessible as possible whilst employing fine quality fabrics and the highest standards of manufacture. The initial collection will be available on the Dogwood website and to view in our showroom from early 2011 as well as from a number of select outlets across the country.

Negotiations are currently under way with a number of designers who are set to start work on the collection within the next few weeks. We’re keen to see a large part of the collection designed and manufactured in England using British designers and fabrics entirely sourced in the UK. There are some practical constraints to this becoming a reality for the entire collection but as much as possible we intend to fly the flag and keep things home grown. Watch this space..!

Horses Fed-Exed to WEG

With the World Equestrian Games starting this weekend in Kentucky, nearly 500 horses have been flown over to the States in the largest airlift of horses for a single event.

But with ticket prices starting from 8,000 euros for an economy ticket (yes there are different classes as with human tickets), going up to 13,000 euros for first class, flying horses is certainly not a cheap affair.

Much like the cabin crew on normal flights, the equine passengers have their own team of flight attendents who tend to their every whim making sure that they are at a comfortable temperature, have all the water they desire and receive reassuring pats when they're feeling a bit nervous.

As well as professional flight grooms and attendents, the horses will also be accompanied by their team vet who will monitor their health during the flights.

Most of the British WEG horses are already seasoned travellers with the eventing, showjumping and dressage horses having been flown around the world to compete internationally.

However it will be the first flight for the vaulting horses and some of the reining horses so extra attention will be given to these first time flyers.

Horses used for beach art display

Heavy horses from Cumbria are to take a pivotal role in a beach art project at Silecroft over the next few days.

The project, a creation by artist Everton Wright, will involve the help of twenty horses and riders for his Walking Drawing project.

Made up of a selection of Clydesdales, Ardennes, and Shire horses, the gentle giants will be filmed as they are ridden over a drawing carved into the sand.

Explaining the technique behind his artwork, Evewright said:

"What happens is I do the drawing using a garden rotavator to create a visual installation on the beach and then ask volunteers to come and walk the drawing."

The horses are to be filmed riding the drawing today while walkers are to be filmed walking it tomorrow.

Other highlights of the show include appearances from Lipizzaner, Lusitano, Andalusian, Fresian and Arabian horses from classical riding schools around Europe.

No margin for error for Burghley leaders

As the cross country kicks off at Burghley Horse Trials today, the leaders from the past two days of dressage have no margin for error as the results have so far been extremely close.

British rider Ruth Edge with Two Thyme took the lead after the dressage yesterday but looks uncertain to keep her riding boot in the door with defending champion Oliver Townend lying in a close third and top riders Mark King and William Fox-Pitt keen to show their worth in the cross country phase.

Despite Mark Phillips' opinion that the course is "softer than last years, many riders have commented that there are some tricky elements to the cross country track this year.

Eventing extraordinaire King talks Burghley

With the start of Burghley Horse Trials only a day away, champion eventer Mary King spoke of her hopefuls for the CCI 4* to Telegraph reporter Will Greenwood while giving him his first riding lesson.

King soon had the reporter cantering around her school and popping over a small fence in between talking of her hopes for top horses Apache Sauce and King's Temptress to help her claim the title for the first time since 1996. The cream of her rides, Imperial Cavalier is to miss the event to save energy for the upcoming World Equestrian Games held in Kentucky later this month.

King's hopefuls will join another 80 or so horses competing at Burghley this year from 13 nations. Other notable names competing include defending champion Oliver Townend, five-times winner Mark Todd, William Fox-Pitt and Paul Tapner.

Burghley is one of two 4* events held in England and is the last major event before the World Equestrian Games start.

Horsepower an "incredible journey" says Clunes

Speaking to Horse and Hound magazine, actor Martin Clunes admitted that his new ITV1 series Horsepower has changed his attitude towards horses.

The two-part series follows Clunes as he explores the human relationship with horses and looks at the differing role of the horse around the world.

Best known for his part in Men Behaving Badly, Clunes doesn't perhaps immediately strike you as an animal person.

However the actor has a real passion for horses and has 12 at his farm in Dorset as well as a racehorse called Buffalo Stampede.

Recently made president of the Royal International Horse show at Hickstead, Clunes' new series really reflects the actors genuine love and admiration for the horse as he learns schooling techniques from Horse Whisperer Monty Roberts, visits wild Mustangs in Nevada and watches the famous Palio horse race in Italy.

After sharing a bottle of Bucks Fizz with Mr Clunes and entertaining his pony-mad children with our selection of pony equipment on our stall at Hickstead this year, it is clear to see that horses really are a huge part of the actor's life and a passion that he enjoys sharing with others.

Retired police horses find new homes

Police horses ready to hang up their bridles and saddles can now rest assured that their retirement will be a happy one as a Lancashire mounted police have set up a "retired police horse benevolent fund."

The Lancashire Constabulary decided that it was time to take over responsibility for the rehoming its horses which in the past fell to charities such as the World Horse Welfare.

Speaking of the new system, PC David Davies from the mounted unit said,

"Once a home is found, the horses will be given free of charge to the new owner and the fund will cover ongoing costs."

The first horse to be re-homed is 21-year-old "George" who has gone to a private home in Clitheroe to be hacked out.

Tony Tyler of World Horse Welfare praised the Lancashire constabulary and said "I'm sure they will check each home carefully."

Shire horses go on tour

Two Shire horses from Daniel Thwaites brewery are abandoning hanging up their horse tack for the rest of the summer as they head to the seaside for their holidays.

The two giants - Wainwright and Midas will be appearing at several seaside locations including Brighton, Portsmouth, Southampton and the New Forest.

So far the horses have already stopped off at Blackpool on Tuesday to enjoy the illuminations and will next be appearing in Brighton to taste a bit of rock on August 24th.

The horses' holiday is to mark the 50th anniversary of the shire's arrival at the Lancashire brewery.

The geldings will be accompanied by their own personal entourage including Thwaites' head groom and coachman.

The horses can be spotted on the following dates and locations:
Tuesday 24th August - Brighton
Wednesday 25th August - Portsmouth, Southampton and Lyndhurst

The fashion world has always had an obsession with riding clothing and horse equipment. Here at Dogwood we are often asked to supply our products to high fashion institutions such as Vogue and Ralph Lauren.

Dogwood returns from Hickstead

After an overall success at Hickstead's Royal International, Dogwood has returned to its normal Chichester residence to resume normal opening hours.

In between serving the new president of the Royal International, Martin Clunes and Olympic gold medal winner Tina Cook, we managed to steal a few glimpses of the various classes going on around us.

The pony showing classes were very cute with pint-sized riders bouncing up and down on their mini ponies, and the scurry classes were amazing to watch with ponies going round the course at phenomenal speeds.
The highlight of the week however had to be the Express Eventing which included some fantastic rounds by Mark Todd and Hampshire-based rider Nici Wilson.

Daring pony takes the plunge

While some of us may have been treated to displays of the Metropolitan Police horses jumping through hoops of fire or the Cossacks' horseback dare devilry at Olympia, few will have seen a horse on a diving board, let alone a very contented horse happily jumping off of that diving board.

However 'Lightning' a chestnut pony from America, makes twice daily leaps off of a specially adapted horse-diving board as part of a show at Magic Kingdom Amusement Park in upstate New York.

Lightning The Wonder Horse, to give him his full title, is the last in a line of diving horses specially trained by their owner to perform equine aquatics in the USA. Lightning does the stunt riderless wearing just a headcollar and needs no form of encouragement other than the promise of a bucket of oats at the end of the day.

Success for Sussex rider at RDA champs

Following fears of disastrous tail plaiting and worries of forgetting the dressage test, Dogwood worker Rosie returned back from the Riding for Disabled Championships triumphant after her Arundel rider took two second places at the Hartpury-based competition.

Despite the scorching heat and a longer than expected journey to the event, the Arundel RDA team managed to transform Arundel Riding School pony Shamus into a true show pony earning him an impressive 20/20 turnout score.

The 13-year-old Arundel rider, led by Rosie, managed to complete a very neat dressage test despite Shamus' insistence on whinnying halfway through one of the 10 metre circles.

Further highlights of the weekend included appearances from RDA patron HRH Princess Anne and RDA supporter Clare Balding.

Goodwood gets 30ft horse

Dubbed the south's answer to the Angel of the North, a 30ft bronze sculpture of a horse's head has been positioned atop of one of the hills overlooking Goodwood.

Known for its flat racing, Goodwood has been chosen as the home for artist Nick Fiddian-Green's magnificent creation and is expecting the sculpture to wow racegoers when it is moved to the members' enclosure during Glorious Goodwood.

Named 'Artemis' after Greek mythology, Fiddian-Green started on his creation last autumn to be finished in time for the flat racing this year.

Speaking of his design, the sculptor said his aim was to: "place beautiful works of art into the landscape."

The horse is set to remain on top of Trundle hill for three weeks until the beginning of Glorius Goodwood at the end of July when it will be moved to the members enclosure at the race course before being positioned in front of Goodwood House for the Vintage festival.

Dogwood customers enjoy aerial acrobatics

Located right next to the Goodwood estate certainly has its perks, especially when it comes to Festival of Speed weekend.

Over the last couple of days Dogwood staff and customers have been treated to various aircraft maneuvering unbelievable acrobatics across the Sussex skies.

From the Red Arrows pulling off their usual daredevil formations, to helicopters performing what can only be described as aerial ballet, there certainly has not been a dull (or quiet), moment in the last couple of days.

So please forgive us if we seem to be shouting at you down the phone or perhaps seem a little distracted, but it is rather hard to stay focused when nine jets are soaring past your window!

If you fancy popping in to catch a fantastic view of the Red Arrows while perusing our collection of Stubben saddles or De Niro riding boots, do come and join us. They are due to display again tomorrow at around 11:30am.

Dogwood supports RDA champion

Dogwood worker, Rosie Mott spent yesterday perfecting her plaiting skills with Arundel RDA champion pony Shamnus in ready for the RDA National Championships at Hartpury next weekend.

The skewbald pony, who is one of the favorites at Arundel Riding School, is to be partnered with one of Arundel RDA's top young riders for the Dressage and 'Countryside Challenge' elements of the competition.

The pairing managed to take 2nd place in the dressage last year for their group and are now looking to go one better this year and take the title.

Traveling with the pair to act as groom, Rosie is frantically trying to improve upon her current plaiting skills, which she herself has described as "atrocious", to ensure that the pair stand the best possible chance of achieving their first place goal.

Horses learn new tricks

Every once in a while you hear a story about a football-playing dog that puts the dribbling skills of the England squad to shame. However a horse that can play football is certainly not common and would certainly make more interesting viewing than the first few England World Cup matches.

Horse football may soon become a more common sight as a Devonshire woman has started training horses to play the sport. Aimed at animals that are unsuitable for being ridden, Vanessa bea from Beaworthy created horse agility to test the skills of horses and owners without the owner needing to ride their horses.

Tests include horses kicking a football, owners taking the horses over a seesaw, weaving around poles, going through hoops and test of balance.
Ms Bee said the exercises help improve the confidence of both horse and owner as the horse really has to trust the owner to complete some of the more tricky tests.

Donkey lover knits for charity

An elderly donkey lover from Bristol has been helping The Donkey Sanctuary by knitting more than 40 cuddly donkeys.
Pat Whiting was inspired to knit the toys for the charity after being given an adoption donkey as a Christmas present one year.
She has now knitted 44 of the soft toys for the Sidmouth-based sanctuary which sells them to raise funds for donkeys all over the world.
A spokseperson for the sanctuary said:
"Pat's knitted donkeys are so popular that one was sold as she was handing them over to our fundraising team."
Despite having suffered five strokes, the pensioner has become so skilled at making the donkeys that she no longer needs to follow the pattern.
Speaking of the woman's gesture, Ruth Burrough, from the fundraising department said:
"We are so grateful to her for taking the time to provide us with all these knitted donkeys, which we can sell and raise much needed funds to help donkeys around the world."

Vet trapped by sleeping horse

A Devonshire vet required the help of local fire and rescue services after becoming trapped by a sleeping horse.

The female vet had been called to a farm near Hillerton Cross, Bow on Saturday night after a horse had become wedged in a fence.

To try and free the animal, the vet administered a sedative which caused the horse to fall heavily asleep, trapping her between the horse and a ditch.

Devon and Somerset Fire Service had to be called to free the woman and release the animal from the fence.

Fire Station manager, Jim Laker, said, "One of the vets got herself caught between the horse and the ditch, but she's fine and we got her out."

The horse was believed to have sustained neck injuries in its escapade, but the vet escaped without injury.

Looking for a Derby winner? Seek some Dr's advice

If you are hoping to pick a Derby winner this year, you may just want to seek some doctor's advice.

Researchers Dr David Marlin, Jane Williams, and Dr Tim Parkin have applied research skills normally used to predict injury and illness risks in horses to devise a winning formula for predicting which horse will win this Saturday.

According to their findings, punters should look for a horse which is short in the odds, is Irish-bred, has been ridden by only one jockey and has won at least twice as a two-year-old.

Their results revealed that horses starting the race as favourite were 4.8 times more likely to win than those that did not. The statistics also showed that for every win as a two-year-old, the likelihood of the horse winning the Epsom Derby was multiplied by 1.5.

Horses born in Ireland were also 2.8 times more likely to win than horses foaled elsewhere and those that had been ridden by the same jockey throughout their career were 2.5 times more likely to win than those ridden by multiple jockeys.

Proving controversial, the findings also showed that breeding had no direct affect on a horse's likelihood of winning the Epsom Derby.
The three specialists in animal health examined data on all 344 horses competing at Epsom between 1988 and 2009, gaining information from The Racing Post website, trainer and stud websites.

According to the model the current favourite Jan Vermeer (2-1) has the best chance in the race and is four times more likely to win than the next horse predicted.

Gypsy just misses out on Guinness record claim

Just four weeks away from being in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest surviving horse which had once been in a royal regiment, Gypsy has died.

Known by all who knew her as "the duchess" because of her royal connections as a Household Cavalry horse, Gypsy reached the grand old age of 35 before she had to be put down.

Having hung up her shining horse tack in her late teens, Gypsy was a much loved addition to the Kilmarnock Horse Rescue Centre and was a firm favourite with both staff and visitors who loved to spend time petting her.

She was known for being a gentle giant and a great calming influence on some of the other horses.

A volunteer at the centre said, "It is devastating, we are all so upset. It is just so sad."

Blue Peter presenter tries her hand at vaulting

Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton has been wowing the vaulting world with her gymnastic ability after winning a British Equestrian Vaulting (BEV) affiliated competition in April this year.

The presenter underwent three weeks of rigorous training with the BEV before taking part in the competition at Moulton College in Northamptonshire.

Speaking of her training, the agile presenter said, "I'm totally in awe of what those girls and boys can do on the back of a horse – jaw dropping is the best word for it."

The event was held as a fundraiser to support the British vaulting team and pay for their horse "Go for Gold" to be transported to Kentucky to represent Great Britain at the World Equestrian Games (25 September – 10 October).

Meet the world's smallest horse-to-be

A miniature horse born in America looks set to be world's smallest horse.

The one-week-old youngster stands at a tiny 14 inches (35.6cm) tall which is seven inches shorter than the average miniature foal.

Named Einstein, the pint-sized pony weighs just six pounds (2.7kg) which is the same weight as a human newborn.

More likely to fit into horse tack made for model horses than for normal sized horses, Einstein's owners won't know if their little pony will take the Guinness World Record title until he is fully grown.

The current record holder Thumbelina, who has her very own website, stands at 17.5 inches (44.5cm) and weighed in at a comparatively hefty 8.5lb (3.9kg) when she was born in 2000.

Unlike Thumbelina who is officially a dwarf rather than a smaller version of a healthy horse, Einstein is well proportioned and simply looks like a miniature version of a standard sized horse – we like to call him ‘The Bonsai horse’.

Is it a dalmation? No it's Spotty the British Spotted pony

Possible to mistake for a Dalmatian, a British spotted pony was born last week in Wembury Point, near Plymouth.

Rather unoriginally named, Spotty the foal gets his colouring from his sire who shares his "leopard spot" colouring.

Around 170 British spotted ponies are born every year and they can have several different colour variations. This includes "leopard spot" which consists of black spots on a white background and "snowflake" which is white spots on a black background.

The breed is renowned for their wonderful temperament which helps make them an ideal and very versatile children's pony.

The distinctive markings formed a natural camouflage for ponies roaming the heaths and forests of ancient Britain and are depicted in several Stone Age paintings.

Dogwood's Manager Hoofs it to the Polls

Never one to shy away from making an entrance and promoting the Dogwood brand, Dogwood's manager took to his horse, Raj, and hoofed it to the polls yesterday.

After a few bemused looks from passers-by he tethered Raj outside and strode in to cast his vote. It was only when he came back out that he realised, regrettably perhaps, it wasn’t his own masculine figure which had drawn all the admiring glances from the female voters, but it was Raj who had them eating out of the sole of his hoof…well, palm of his hand doesn’t quite work with horses!

After much stroking and pats a’ plenty, (that’s Raj – not Dogwood's manager) he hopped back on and rode off into the sunset. He told us it was easier to ride to the polling station rather than to drive or walk, but the Dogwood staff don’t really buy that, we believe it was really a long harboured John Wayne-esque fantasy of his.

Renowned for only selecting display items from companies of the highest calibre, Dogwood was delighted to have been invited to supply Ralph Lauren with items for its window display back in 2008 and thrilled to have been asked a second time round in February this year.

Surrounding Ralph Lauren's latest spring collection are items including bridles, riding boots and saddle cloths from Dogwood London.

Just take a stroll past the prestigious Bond Street and Brompton Cross stores to see the magnificent display for yourselves, but be quick – it will only be on display until the middle of April.

Budweiser Clydesdales continue to touch the hearts of Superbowl spectators

Guaranteed to make you feel all warm and gooey inside, the latest Budweiser super bowl advert is just as cute as its previous editions.

While there had been some doubt whether the Clydesdale advert would be shown, the overwhelming support the facebook campaign received ensured that tradition was followed and the Clydesdale advert was shown at this year's (2010) super bowl.

Normally involving several Clydesdales in some kind of country setting, the adverts generally touch on aspects of love, competition, heritage and perseverance in wonderfully sweet and humorous stories that the Clydesdales appear to act out in a touchingly natural way.

Previous adverts have included a 'Rocky' themed commercial with a Clydesdale in training to pull the infamous Budweiser wagon and another has involved a Clydesdale which has fallen in love with a circus horse and runs away to look for her.

Now an iconic part of Budweiser's advert campaign, the much adored heavy horses show the strong regard that is still held for the traditional values that the adverts portray.

Wild ponies released to increase Kent's biodiversity

Any keen gardener could quickly tell you the great benefits horse manure gives to plant-life. Great for providing natural fertiliser rich in nutrients and as a living lawnmower, herds of horses are now being deployed in several parts of the country to help revive nature reserves.

Kent is the latest area to benefit from these organic lawn mowers as a herd of wild horses is to be released into the South Foreland Valley nature reserve at St Margaret's Bay near Dover.

The project is a collaboration between conservation groups, The Wildwood Trust and White Cliffs Countryside Project as well as St Margaret's parish council. The organisations are hoping that the ponies will help increase biodiversity in the region.

Currently, important species of plants and insects occupying the site are under threat unless the area is grazed by animals.

The horses to be released were brought over from Holland four years ago and are the closest living relatives of the extinct tarpan, the wild forest horse which roamed Britain in prehistoric times.

Prince Harry takes royal tumble at Sentebale polo match

Prince Harry has managed to raise £30,000 at a charity polo match despite losing a bet and falling off his pony.

The Prince was playing in a fund-raising match in Barbados and had made a deal with a wealthy businessman that he would receive a large donation if he managed to stay on his horse for the whole match.

Unfortunately for the Prince, his horse slipped as he was making a sharp turn, causing Harry to go crashing to the ground, taking his hopes of a large donation with him.

Believing that the bet was off, the Prince angrily threw his mallet to the ground and punched his helmet in frustration.

Luckily for Harry the generous businessman gave the donation regardless, blaming the accident on the horse slipping rather than any rider error.

Speaking of his fall, the Prince commented, "When I fell off, I threw down my mallet and shouted 'What a waste of 100,000 (Barbados dollars)'. I was furious with myself."

"Fortunately, this extremely generous gentleman has already been in touch and told us that it was clear that the horse fell over, rather than I fell off it, so he was happy to honour the 100,000 dollars. What a star."

The match was part of the annual Sentebale Polo Cup to raise money for the Prince's charity Sentebale, which aims to help underprivileged children in the African kingdom of Lesotho.

Drowning horse saved by dedicated father

With the recent cold weather, many rivers and lakes have frozen over, making it hard for people and wildlife alike to differentiate between solid and frozen ground. There have been several recent stories about horses and other wildlife which have mistakenly ventured onto frozen water and, sadly, most of these had tragic consequences.

However, the story of a dad who managed to help rescue his daughter's horse which fell into a frozen lake has a much happier outcome.

The dad of six from Wintersett, West Yorkshire, was taking his daughter's horse, Harry, for a walk when he briefly let go of the reins to shut a gate, allowing the horse to trot off.

"I couldn't keep up with him. He was trotting in the direction of the lake. I saw him go towards the middle of the lake and he went straight through the ice. All of a sudden his head bobbed back up," the dad said.

After dialling 999, the father found a step ladder to make his way down the bank and a rope to tie around the horse's head so he wouldn't go under.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, the man had fallen in with the horse and firefighters first had to pull him to safety before helping the horse out of the water.

The horse was wrapped in horse rugs and encouraged to move around to help raise its temperature.

Speaking of his ordeal, the man said, "It was a stupid thing going for the horse but I had to do it. He's an ex-racehorse and a family pet who belongs to my 10-year-old daughter."

Both the horse and the dedicated father appear to have escaped the incident relatively unscathed and are recovering well.

Dogwood products in 'Best of British' Square Mile magazine edition

While we needed no reassuring that our collection of equestrian goods was top of the range, being asked to provide some of our products for Square Mile magazine's 'Best of British 2009' photo shoot certainly helped reaffirm our confidence.

Involving two female models and one male model dressed in little more than Dogwood riding boots and riding hats, it would be fair to say the shoot was not your average 'horsey' shoot. However from such a prestigious magazine featuring, as they put it, "everything luxury", the standard equestrian look would be far too passé.

Posing in Vivienne Westwood jackets and stockings, the models wonderfully demonstrated how the riding boot is just as much at home on the catwalk as it is in the stable yard. Indeed, the leather riding boot is almost as popular in the fashion world as it is with equestrians, causing fashionistas around the world to race to get their hands on a pair of riding boots to team with jeans rather than jodhpurs.

Having now appeared in Ralph Lauren's Bond Street window front, Square Mile magazine's Best of British edition and photo shoot requests coming in thick and fast from the likes of the Sunday Times' fashion magazine Style and the fashion bible itself, Vogue, Dogwood products are quickly becoming hot property in the fashion world.

Liverpool visitors to be greeted by 8ft bronze horse

Visitors to Liverpool will soon be greeted by a life-size bronze statue of a shire horse complete with horse tack. Honouring the city's hard-working dock horses and carters that worked in the city for 250 years, the statue is to be unveiled in the Albert Dock on May 1st this year, the traditional date for the May Day Horse parade.
The eight-foot sculpture, called 'Waiting' is the creation of acclaimed sculptor Judy Boyt, and will be mounted on a plinth along with information on the history of the working horses.
The horses were used to carry provisions from the docks to the warehouses and shops and were essential during the petrol-rationed days of World War II.

In 1935, Liverpool had 4,910 working horses which was the highest amount outside of London but by the 1960's, they had been replaced by motor vehicles.

"The horse drawn carts have 250 years of history and they were so important to Liverpool" Jimmy Doran, one of the few surviving carters from the 1940's said.

Until now, the only monument to the horses has been a plaque near to where the horses were originally stabled. Fundraisers, backed by Liverpool council and the British Horse Society, have been campaigning for a proper monument since 1977 and have so far raised £120,000 to go towards the bronze horse.

The statue is hoped to remind the younger generation and visitors to Liverpool of the city's past and the important work the Carters and their faithful equine companions did.

TLC more important than expensive horse tack for retired horses needing a home

An urgent appeal is being made by a horse charity looking to re-home retired horses whose "desperate" owners are struggling in the credit crunch.

While most are no longer suitable for being ridden, they will make loveable companions to other horses, and owners don't have to pay out for expensive new horse tack.

The Horse Trust, which is based in Speen, Buckinghamshire has been "inundated" with requests from people to re-home horses but due to the surge in unwanted horses and a drop in donations the trust has had to close its doors to new entrants, leaving many horses with an uncertain future.

Ann Suaznabar from Kemsing, near Sevenoaks, Kent, is one such owner desperate to find a new home for her old horse. She has had Cocky, a 27-year-old grey gelding for 10 years but says she may have to resort to euthanasia if she can't find a new home for him soon.

"He's getting old now and needs a stable home. My only alternative is to have him put to sleep, which I really don't want to do."

Welfare and Education Officer at the Horse Trust, Liane Crowther, said: "We desperately need more homes for horses like Cocky."

With the recession showing no signs of a quick recovery, many owners are struggling to pay the cost of keeping a horse. Sadly this not only is leading to a rise in horses given over to Horse sanctuaries such as the Horse Trust, but also to a rise in abandoned and neglected horses as well.

Many of the horses simply need a happy home where they can spend the rest of their days. To these horses, regular TLC is far more important than fitting them with expensive horse tack and fancy saddlery.

Horse rugs can be confusing so here are the ins and outs of the turnout rug

Choosing a horse rug that will keep your horse clean, dry and warm during the winter months can prove a challenge, especially with the wide array of turnout rugs on offer. Without a sufficient rug to keep them warm, a turned out horse can quickly lose condition so finding a rug that will fight off the cold, is important.

The turnout rug is designed to keep the horse clean and dry when out in the field, and also warm during the winter. They are made from waterproof synthetic material and are available in different colours and thicknesses/weights of filling which offer varying degrees of warmth to the horse.

While lightweight summer turnout rugs may have no filling and are used simply to keep the horse warm and dry, lightweight winter turnout rugs may have up to 150g of filling and are used for slightly cooler late summer nights. When it gets a little more chilly, the medium weight turnout rug is more beneficial with 150g-300g of filling to add some extra heat to your horse.

Lastly for the middle of winter when the temperature really drops and the fields are covered with a blanket of frost in the mornings, the heavyweight turnout rugs are needed. With 300g and upwards of filling, these rugs are designed to generate and retain as much heat as possible whilst still allowing your horse the full flexibility and freedom of movement it needs.

The heavy weight rugs also often come with neck covers to ensure that the whole of the horse's body is kept warm. These can either come as part of the rug itself or it can be bought as an optional extra so that you can add it as and when your horse needs it.

To save on the trouble and expense of buying separate rugs for each change in temperature, 'two in one' rugs are available which come with interchangeable liners meaning that you can change the warmth the turnout rug offers depending on the weather.

The Rambo Duo is a prime example of this type of design. With a detachable under blanket, the existing liner can be taken out or added to with one of the three different weighted liners that are available. Made from ballistic nylon, a turnout rug like the Rambo Duo, is much less susceptible to rips and tears that other seemingly more economical rugs may be prone to.

Ripped and torn rugs can be the bane of the horse owner's bank balance during the winter months. While it is tempting to opt for a cheaper rug, in the long term, a more expensive but more durable horse rug will prove more economical in the long run and will often come with a two or three year guarantee like the Rambo Duo.

Welsh ponies - Not just for riding school beginners wearing jodhpur boots

From jodhpur boot-wearing pony clubbers to top showing professionals, the Welsh pony is a much loved and very versatile breed. Descended from the Celtic pony, the Welsh mountain pony is believed to have existed in the mountains of Wales for over a thousand years enduring the extreme temperatures and lack of nourishment.

No doubt due to their history, Welsh ponies are extremely hardy and have an intelligence which has made them one of the finest foundations for horse breeding in the world. Coupled with their renown for a kind temperament, they have become an extremely popular children's pony and great all rounder.

With a slightly dished head, the Welsh pony's Arab roots are evident. When the Romans invaded Britain, they brought with them horses of Arabian descent from their African campaigning. When they left Britain in the fifth century most of their horses were turned loose or bartered, resulting in the introduction of Arab blood into British native breeds.

To be successful in showing, the Welsh pony should not exceed 12hh and should have a small head with neat pointed ears, big bold eyes and a wide forehead. The jaw should be clean cut, narrowing to a small muzzle with a good sized and well carried neck and shoulders that slope back to a clearly defined wither. The limbs must be set square and the tail should be set high and carried happily.

Stockier and bigger than the Welsh pony, the Welsh Cob is the stronger counterpart of the Welsh pony. They are surefooted and like all Welsh breeds, are natural jumpers and excel in harness. As with the Welsh pony, the Welsh Cob should have bold prominent eyes, a broad forehead and neat, well set ears. According to some, the wider and greater the eye, the deeper into the pony's heart you will see.

The body of the Welsh Cob should be deep with strong limbs and they should have a straight, free and forceful gait. Despite their stocky size, their agile and impulsive gaits also make them suitable for dressage.

With their incredible versatility, it is easy to see therefore what makes Welsh ponies such a popular breed. Suitable for dressage, jumping, hunting and driving, this breed is like no other and is certainly not limited for use as a riding school pony with beginners clad in jodhpur boot around on their backs.

Have a non-spring clean by washing your horse rugs and tidying your stable

Spring needn't be the only time for a good clean up. Having a tidy of your stable and a sort out of all your horse rugs and equipment is important for keeping your stable a safe environment to work in and around. It also provides a good opportunity to check for any repairs that need to be made or equipment that should be replaced.

Start by having a good sweep up – take out everything from each area so that you can get into the corners and reach any dropped food that might encourage mice and rats into the yard. Make sure that any tools are hung up out of the way so that they can't be tripped over and aren't going to fall suddenly and spook the horses.

Make sure that there are no holes in the feed bins and that they are in a waterproof container so that feed isn't spoiled by the damp and doesn't get eaten by vermin. Large plastic dustbins can provide cheap places to store feed although persistent rats can gnaw through them so metal alternatives are better.

Walk around your horse's field and collect any rubbish that may have accumulated, as well as checking fencing and gates for any repairs that need to be made. Also, pull up any ragwort which can seed quickly and spread around the field causing a deadly menace to your horse.

Give your horse's equipment a good sort out and wash. Put your horse's turnout and stable rugs through the washing machine and keep them somewhere dry and away from where vermin can reach them. Find somewhere in prominent view to pin up an emergency contact list with names and numbers of owners, vets and farriers.

Finally, add some colour to your yard by putting up hanging baskets. Once everything from the fences to the horse rugs is in order, you can put your feet up and enjoy a well deserved cup of tea.

Really useful guide to choosing the right horse rug

When working out how to choose horse rugs, the Dogwood team knows a thing or two. Here's our handy, really useful guide to selecting and buying the best rug for your animal.

First, think about your horse. Why would you want to put a 'coat' on your horse? Quite simply, this piece of equestrian equipment can keep your animals clean, dry and warm - all very practical reasons.

A thoroughbred stabled all year will need a warmer rug than a hardy cob that lives outside most of the time.

Then consider the weather and the seasons. In the summer time, single summer sheet rugs may be all that you need, while autumn and winter will almost certainly require stable rugs and turnout rugs with a thermal filling.

Broadly speaking, there are just two main categories of equestrian rug: turnout and stable rug. However, within those two categories there are various distinctions - from cooler, exercise and fleece rugs to anti-sweat rugs, fly and summer sheets.

The main point to remember is this: horse rugs should not be too tight round the neck, shoulder or chest area and the sides of a rug should ensure none of the horse's belly is visible.

Stable rugs
Modern rugs designed for use in stables keep horses warm - but they are not waterproof because they are not intended for outdoor use.

Quilted and padded stable rugs are common, made of different weights and thicknesses of filling. They tend to be breathable, allowing perspiration to evaporate and to prevent chilling.

Night time may require heavier stable rugs to be placed on a horse due to the temperature differences between colder nights and warmer days.

A useful development are stable rugs that can be used on a damp horse. The advanced fabric wicks away moisture and helps the animal dry quickly.

Turnout rugs

Keeping your riding boots in the stirrups should be the least of your concerns when you're out for a relaxing hack in the countryside. However, unless your horse is of the 'bombproof' variety, the great outdoors can provide many different objects and noises that can potentially spook your horse.

Flight rather than fight
Horses are prey animals so their natural instinct is to flee from any potential dangers whether this be a lion or a startled pheasant. Some horses are naturally nervier than others - pure thoroughbreds are more predisposed to being flighty than say a cob simply because of their breeding. Previous bad experiences can also cause a horse to become 'spooky' as well.

If your horse is of the nervous kind, there are plenty of things you can do to help make a hack in the woods a pleasurable experience for you and your horse. The main element to stopping a horse from shying or bolting is to get them to trust you. Building a trusting relationship with your horse will do wonders for your partnership and will ensure you get the best from your horse both in and out of the competition field as they overcome their natural flight instinct and put their confidence in you.

Stay calm and your horse will stay calm too
The first common mistake riders make when dealing with a nervous horse is to tense up themselves. They are likely to tighten their grip, shift their weight forward and generally stiffen their bodies all the way down their long riding boots - all elements that will only increase your horse's fear. Although sometimes hard to do, the best action is to behave like everything is fine to try and con your horse into thinking the same.

If you are apprehensive about going out on a hack alone, ask someone on your yard with a more bombproof horse to come out with you. Horses are herd animals and a nervy horse will gain confidence from being behind a more relaxed and sensible horse. If for example the horse in front doesn't spook at the plastic bag then your horse is less likely to spook at it too. If you have no one to go out with on horseback, get someone to walk in front of your horse or walk to the side of it so they can lead your horse if necessary.

Help your horse overcome its fear
If there is a particular thing that your horse is scared of such as flapping plastic, try tying some onto the fence of your horse's field so that gradually they become accustomed to it. If it is dogs they are scared of, ask someone you know with a dog to bring it to your yard or field and gradually bring it closer each time to your horse. Always be patient with your horse even when it can be frustrating – remember it is fear that they are overcoming and this can take time.

Reassuring pats and talking calmly to your horse can do wonders when they are frightened and can help calm you down too. If your horse does bolt, pull on one rein in a sea-saw motion rather than on both as they will simply just lean on the bit. If there's space, try and circle your horse making the circles increasingly smaller to gradually slow them down.

Praise your horse when it shows signs of overcoming its phobias
Make sure you reward your horse when it shows signs of overcoming its fear - a Polo at the right moment can make all the difference.

Over time following these steps can help ensure that your riding boots stay securely in the stirrups.

Firstly, remove excess dirt with a stiff brush or hose the rug down. The rug can either be washed by hand or on a delicate machine cycle on a cool wash (maximum temperature 30 degrees Celsius).

Player's leather riding boots got a soaking at the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup final

The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup is supposed to signal the height of summer with overflowing jugs of Pimms and champagne bottles lined up by the dozen, alongside merry picnic-ers sprawled across Cowdray's vast green fields enjoying the warmth of the elusive British summer. Sultry South American polo players career up and down the pitch showing off their riding finesse atop the finest Argentinian ponies money can buy, the sun gleaming off their heavily polished leather riding boots attracting the admiration of the 'glitterati' dressed in skimpy summer dresses and killer high heels. This year however, things were slightly different.

Yes, there was lots of Pimms, and of course there was champagne, yes the 'glitterati' were there decked out in their finest designer dresses and the polo players were certainly as sultry and handsome as ever. However, the sun was very noticeably absent. With strong winds and regular intervals of showers, unfortunately it was rain rather than sun that gleamed off the player's riding boots.

In true British fashion, the bad weather made the spectators only more determined to carry on with their picnicking. Having been brought up with strong scouting and guiding mentality, the ever prepared Brits soon had their gilets, cashmere scarves, wax jackets and brollies out so that feasts of coronation pheasant, mango rice salad, smoked salmon and strawberry and meringue desserts could be resumed, albeit under the cover of make shift tents and shelters.

The match itself, unlike the weather, certainly did not disappoint as Dubai and La Bamba De Areco battled it out against each other to reach a final score of 13-10 to La Bamba De Areco. Cries of "And the whistle blows" and "Veuve, Veuve Clicquot" filled the air as the commentator's enthusiastic voice boomed round the pitch's PA system. The succession of goal after goal helped the crowds forget the cold rain and biting winds that sent picnic chairs flying and had ladies clinging desperately to their dresses to avoid the inevitable 'Marilyn Monroe moment'.

When play became too much for some, the rows of fancy stands selling all sorts of delights from Ferraris to riding boots and polo mallets were ready to lure the spectators away from the game. Although the weather wasn't quite fitting for the Caribbean cocktail bar that was optimistically parked at the forefront of the stands, sales of hot chocolate and coffee from another outlet definitely benefited from the somewhat autumnal weather.

After the match had drawn to a close, the last mouthfuls of champers and Pimms had been sipped and all leather riding boots had been swapped for Brogues, the fleet of Aston Martins, Range Rovers and Porsches that had filled the car park slowly drifted off home leaving a wake of broken brollies and Clicquot corks in their stead.

Poor. Old. Tired. Horse. Excellent exhibition, but no horse tack in sight.

The lovely people at Dogwood London have invited me to write a guest article on their website - not because of my deep knowledge of horse tack, but because I was getting excited about the recent show at the ICA, called "Poor. Old. Tired. Horse."

The title comes from the name of a visual poetry magazine created by Ian Hamilton Finlay, who in turn took it from a phrase in a poem by Robert Creeley, one of the Black Mountain poets. The resulting show, therefore, has little to do directly with horses - there's quite a distance between the animal in the poem and his eventual appearance in the exhibition, after all - and quite a lot to do with how the way a written work is printed affects the way we read it.

As a practising poet, I get excited about this kind of thing very easily. I know it's not true for everyone; when I tried to tell the Dogwood manager about the exhibition while watching the same dressage event, it initially led to a little gentle teasing, but I stuck to my guns - and once I showed him the online reviews to prove it wasn't just me getting excited, he said I should share that here.

So trust me; if you're the kind of person who appreciates the finer things (and that would be why you are on the Dogwood site, wouldn't it?) this is a fascinating exhibit. The words on show aren't restrained by the same horizontal lines you get on a typical page, or on the internet, but they get to dance.

Almost literally, in some cases; the conical word machines of Lilian Lijn set the words around their surface into motion, making them pirouette before your eyes. When the phrase in motion is "sky never stops", the text offset so that the words move against each other as the cone spins, it's entirely pleasurable to hold a remembered image of the ever-changing sky against the artwork in front of you.

And if a literary professional borrowed by an equestrian site isn't your ideal source of art recommendations to trust, perhaps I can point you at the reviews online? The four-star review in Time Out says "exhibitions director Mark Sladen's careful selection of key works across the genre makes a Tardis of the ICA and the years that separate them concertina like squeezebox bellows." The art journal e-flux calls it "an exhibition of art that verges on poetry", and the Telegraph quotes Ian Hamilton Finlay's comment, with seeming approval, that "If I was asked 'Why do you like concrete poetry?' I could truthfully answer 'Because it is beautiful'."

And beauty catches the eye - just look at the gorgeous leather goods elsewhere on the Dogwood site for evidence of that - so it's a show well worth catching if you're in London before it closes. Given it's an exhibition with free entry, there's nothing to lose, and every chance of walking away with a spot of beauty giving uplift to your day. Not much chance of finding horse tack there, though.

Horse rugs through the ages, from tribal blankets to fashion statements

Used to keep your steed nice and snug during the winter and fly-free during the summer, horse rugs have evolved considerably since its Native American founding.

Used initially to keep the rider warm by the tribes of the Native Americans, horse blankets were the only thing between horse and rider and were attached by string or rope around the horse, much like a girth on today's saddles. Blankets were used almost like currency; they were commonly given to other tribes or outsiders in return for other possessions.

Hand woven from wool cloth, the blankets were not easy to make and certainly did not last as long as the rugs of today. Before it could be woven, the wool had to be cleaned and spun and dyes had to be created from a mixture of vegetables and plants to form the vivid colours they are still so well renowned for to this day.

Although not available in quite as many colours or designs as the Native American horse blankets, the horse rug of today comes in a variety of styles and shapes to suit a variety of different functions. From stable rugs to turnout rugs, pony fly rugs to horse travel rugs, today horse blankets can be found for every occasion. Far from the primitive woollen creations that the tribes would create, modern rugs are a feat of engineering with their antibacterial linings and waterproof outer fabric. Some rugs even incorporate therapeutic silver technology to help promote better blood circulation and to reduce any swelling.

Today's horse blankets are often items of style and luxury as well as items of necessity. The horse's or owner's name can be embroidered onto the sides and the colour is often chosen to compliment the horse's colourings. Celebrities such as Katie Price have even commissioned their own unique range of horse rugs reflecting how fashion for horses has become almost as important as fashion for people.
